Special Issue on the Literature of Laughter

Special Issue on the Literature of Laughter

Arab World English Journal for Translation & Literary Studies (AWEJTLS) welcomes the submission of papers for a Special Issue of the Literature of Laughter. We have the honor to announce that the guest editor for this issue is Professor Manfred Malzahn from United Arab Emirates University, Al Ain, UAE. The issue publication date is December 2022. The deadline for the manuscript submissions is August 31, 2022.

Contributions to this Special Issue should focus on texts pertaining to comedy, farce, burlesque, satire, parody, or pastiche in anglophone literature.

In their discussions, authors may attempt to examine the artistic merits and to interrogate the ethics of diverse forms of ridicule. They may also deal with the reception of anglophone comedy or satire in the Arab world or with specific challenges that such works pose to translators. Possible topic areas include—but are by no means limited to—the following:

  • Comedy and cultural identity
  • The (p)untranslatability of humour
  • Comic relief in tragic plays
  • The ethics of irreverence
  • The (in)efficacy of satire
  • Laughter and absurdity
  • The art of nonsense
  • Stage comedy vs TV sitcom
  • Comedy and political correctness
  • Jokers, jesters, fools and tricksters
  • Laughing back: postcolonial humour
